This week, we speak to the team at EndoShunt is an innovative medical device for targeted hemorrhage control in emergency situations. The CEO Tyler Zanon shares his insights about the company and his entrepreneurial journey.
Tell us about your company.
Tyler: EndoShunt is a first of its kind temporary, minimally invasive medical device that aims to end preventable deaths from abdominal hemorrhage by creating a size adjustable tunnel inside of the IVC or aorta. Rather than cutting off blood flow entirely, EndoShunt ensures our patients’ blood continues to flow to where it should while preventing it from flowing out of where it shouldn’t – mitigating risks as serious as blood poisoning, amputation, or organ failure which are commonly associated with current treatment alternatives.
What made you become an entrepreneur?
Tyler: We all got into healthcare product development to make a difference in patients’ lives. Industry does not always decide to develop the right product but rather the convenient product. As entrepreneurs, we have the control to ensure we are developing a product that is profitable for our trauma centers, effective and user-friendly for our surgeons, and potentially life altering for our intended patient populations.
What is the most challenging part of running your own startup?
Tyler: Effectively working in a startup requires each founder to wear numerous hats. You may not always know the right answers, but it is your job to partner with those who do or to go out and find those answers.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced when looking for funding?
Tyler: We are first time founders so we do not have historical warm connections we can leverage. To mitigate this, we’ve participated in numerous conferences and pitch competitions where we have drastically increased our prospective investor network and increased our odds of fundraising success.
What is the most rewarding aspect of entrepreneurship?
Tyler: As an entrepreneur you get to play a vital role in building something from the ground up. Each milestone accomplished is directly related to self-motivation and teamwork or collaboration that results in an incredible feeling of worth. In the end, the changes driven by entrepreneurs are directly aligned with improving peoples lives and there’s a really satisfying feeling in that reality.
