Startup of the week: BeCare Link

Updated: Nov 28, 2023

This week, we look at BeCare Link, a gamified remote patient monitoring platform for multiple neurological conditions. BeCare Link provides validated, quantitative measurements of neurological function and cognition, supplemented by AI analysis to improve patient care. We spoke to Dr. Charisse Litchman, Co Founder and Chief Medical Officer of the company, to learn more!

Tell us about your company.

Charisse: BeCareLink is a digital health company which has created a quantitative neurologic assessment enhanced by AI to help with the detection and monitoring of neurologic disorders. Over 75 percent of neurologic patients are treated by primary care doctors because of the worsening scarcity of neurologists. By providing quantitative assessments to patients and clinicians, our mobile apps act as a tool to reduce long-term disability. The first app, BeCare MS Link, was put on the google and iOS stores in 2019 and has over 5,000 MS users collected organically. Earlier this month we released a general neurologic exam (BeCare Neuro Link) which will act as a screening tool to enable people to determine if they have a neurologic abnormality on exam and need to seek further care .

What made you become an entrepreneur?

Charisse: Becoming an entrepreneur had never been my primary concern. The dire need for remote and quantitative neurologic exams became increasingly evident , especially since the start of the pandemic when critical decisions in neurologic care were based on inadequate neurologic assessments over zoom calls. I became an entrepreneur to help the countless diagnosed and as yet undiagnosed patients afflicted with neurologic disorders.

What is the most challenging part of running your own startup?

Charisse: The most challenging aspect of running our startup has been the need to allocate time on fundraising taking time from expanding our services with better design and addressing more disease states.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced when looking for funding?

Charisse: The greatest challenge has been making the transition from pre-revenue to revenue producing which would attract more investors. We have had no problem "selling" our app to patients and clinicians who try it out. Once they understand the potential BeCareLink has to change lives, they become quite engaged.

What is the most rewarding aspect of entrepreneurship?

Charisse: The most rewarding aspect of creating BeCareLink has been channeling creativity and inspiration into an endeavor that improves accessibility to quality and quantitative neurologic assessments.
