This integrated approach is key to addressing the mental health crisis among youth. We spoke to the founder of Upstrive to learn more about their mission.
Tell us about your company.
Sven Maikranz: The mental health of teenagers is at an all-time low, with more than half perceiving their mental health as poor. Parents and schools are overwhelmed by this problem and lack the resources and skills to address it. Our dual-app, Upstrive, backed by science and powered by AI, provides the necessary skills and tools not just for teenagers, but also for parents and schools, which is critical to tackling this problem. Unlike other apps, Upstrive offers all required tools in one application, including an AI coach, and empowers teens to confidently face life's challenges, supported by parents and schools.
What made you become an entrepreneur?
Sven Maikranz: After a 25-year corporate career, I founded Upstrive to tackle a global issue-the declining mental health of teenagers. This mission became a personal calling, driving me to create a solution that makes a real impact.
What is the most challenging part of running your own startup?
Sven Maikranz: Deciding every day where my time would be most effective. Balancing strategic growth with day-to-day operations requires constant prioritization and focus.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced when looking for funding?
Sven Maikranz: Impact VCs often pretend to be willing to sacrifice profits or expectations for impact, but I have found that most just want the additional 'impact' badge with the same expectations as other VCs.
What is the most rewarding aspect of entrepreneurship?
Sven Maikranz: Making a difference in other people's lives. With Upstrive, we find students that need support every day. It is the most rewarding experience I have ever had.
